It is with profound sorrow that we announce the passing of John Hudson Dilgen, age 23, of Staten Island, New York, who passed away on April 19, 2026, in Tottenville. His life was defined by extraordinary courage, deep compassion, and an unwavering commitment to helping others.
Born on July 20, 2002, in Brooklyn, New York, to Faye Purpura Dilgen and John Dilgen, John Hudson moved to Tottenville at the age of one, where he was raised in a close-knit community that witnessed his growth into an inspiring young man. He attended P.S. 1 and I.S. 34 and was a proud member of Cub Pack 21, experiences that helped shape his early values of friendship, leadership, and service.
From birth, John Hudson lived with Epidermolysis Bullosa (EB), a rare and challenging genetic condition. Despite the hardships he faced, he refused to be defined by his diagnosis. Instead, he became a powerful advocate for individuals living with EB, using his voice to raise awareness, inspire change, and bring hope to countless families. His advocacy and determination earned him recognition as one of Staten Island’s most influential young voices in 2016, a testament to the impact he made in his community and beyond.
John Hudson’s life was also filled with joy and passion. He found happiness in cooking for his family and expressed his creativity and personality through his love for Japanese culture, Disney pin collecting and trading, Marvel stories, and his support for the New York Rangers. These interests reflected his vibrant spirit and the warmth he brought into everyday life.
Above all, John Hudson’s greatest mission was to make a difference through his involvement with the EB Research Partnership—and he did exactly that. His advocacy, authenticity, and strength continue to inspire all who carry his legacy forward. He will be remembered not only for the challenges he endured, but for the love, purpose, and generosity he shared so freely with others.
He is survived by his loving mother, Faye; his sister, Kalilla; his brother, Teak; his brother-in-law, Pascal; his maternal grandparents, Peter and Cathy Purpura; his paternal grandmother, Enea Dilgen; and many loving aunts, uncles, and cousins. He was predeceased by his father, John Dilgen; his paternal grandfather, John Dilgen; and his maternal grandmother, Mildred Burns.
Friends and loved ones may visit on Wednesday from 2:00–4:00 PM and 7:00–9:00 PM. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Thursday at Our Lady Help of Christians Roman Catholic Church at 11:00 AM.
John Hudson Dilgen will be deeply missed, forever cherished, and always remembered by all who had the privilege of knowing and loving him.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in his memory to organizations dedicated to supporting individuals with EB and advancing research toward a cure, honoring both his life and his enduring mission to make a difference.
